Partner-first costs you years and gives a rival the chance to buy the same target out from under you; cold acquisition is faster but means paying a full, undiscounted price for unresolved scientific risk. Check Your Modality Gaps, Not Just Your Disease-Area Gaps
The screening checklist in Step 2 and the risk posture in Step 3 both assume you already know what you're looking for — but “what we're missing” is a two-dimensional question, not a one-dimensional one. Therapeutic area is one axis; modality (the underlying technology — antibody-drug conjugates, radiopharmaceuticals, RNA-based therapies, cell therapy) is a separate axis, and a company can be fully committed to a disease area while still lacking a specific modality within it. When Novartis paid over $1 billion for Myricx Bio, an ADC company, in 2026, its head of biomedical research, Fiona Marshall, said directly the deal “reflects our strategy to scale innovative platforms, as we have with radioligand therapies.” Novartis was already one of the largest oncology players in the industry — the acquisition wasn't about entering a new disease area, it was about closing a specific modality gap inside an area it already dominated.
