What Tesla Actually Makes Money From

Stripped down, Tesla's product lines all trace back to the same underlying technologies: battery cells, electric motors, and AI software for perception and control. These get productized in two main ways today, electric vehicles and stationary energy storage (Megapack and Powerwall), with a third, the Optimus humanoid robot, still in early development. Everything else, charging infrastructure, vehicle insurance, used car sales, and software subscriptions, is a derivative of these core products rather than an independent business.


In fiscal year 2025, automotive revenue reached approximately $69.5 billion, representing about 73 percent of total revenue. Energy generation and storage contributed roughly $12.8 billion, or 13 percent, and services and other contributed about $12.5 billion, the remaining 13 percent. The notable shift is in the trend lines: automotive revenue fell roughly 10 percent year over year, while energy storage revenue grew by more than 26 percent and services grew by about 19 percent.


The Segment Profitability Picture

Tesla discloses gross profit for two reporting segments: automotive (combined with services), and energy generation and storage. The trend over the past several years is one of the clearest signals in the entire business.



Automotive and services gross profit peaked at roughly $20.6 billion in 2022 and has declined for two consecutive years since, falling to about $14.8 billion in 2024. Over the same period, energy storage gross profit moved from a small loss in 2021 to $2.6 billion in 2024, a margin of about 26 percent, now exceeding the automotive segment's margin. At the company level, full-year 2025 operating income was approximately $4.4 billion on revenue of $94.8 billion, an operating margin of about 4.6 percent, down sharply from 16.8 percent in 2022.


The company remains solidly profitable and holds over $36 billion in cash and investments. It is not a cash-burning venture. But the trend is one of margin compression in the core automotive business, offset by a smaller but fast-growing and increasingly profitable energy storage business.


The Valuation Gap

Tesla typically trades at a price-to-earnings ratio in the range of 100 to 200 times, depending on the day. Traditional automakers trade in the single digits to low teens. Even generous technology multiples for companies like Apple or Nvidia fall well short of Tesla's multiple. Valued purely as a car company with a growing energy storage business, Tesla's share price would need to be dramatically lower than where it currently trades.


The gap is filled by optionality on businesses that do not yet meaningfully appear in the financial statements: full self-driving software and robotaxi services, and the Optimus humanoid robot. Tesla's FSD software has reached what the company describes as a quasi-Level 4 threshold, with regulatory approval in markets such as the UAE beginning in early 2026 and approval in China expected around February or March 2026. Some analysts project FSD subscriptions and robotaxi services could each contribute more than $10 billion in gross profit by 2030, though these are projections, not current results.


This is the core of what might be called a fame premium: the market pricing in outcomes years or even a decade ahead of when a less prominent company would normally be credited for them. That is not inherently irrational, it simply means the stock behaves more like a venture capital position than a traditional equity, with correspondingly higher volatility and binary-outcome risk.


Competition from China and the Tariff Backdrop

Chinese manufacturers have become serious competitors across both of Tesla's core categories. In electric vehicles, companies including BYD have introduced models priced dramatically below comparable American offerings, BYD has unveiled a fully electric crossover SUV priced at roughly $14,000, compared with approximately $33,600 for the least expensive American EV. In advanced driver assistance and autonomy, companies such as Li Auto and Momenta have reported rapid improvements, with Momenta partnering with Uber to test Level 4 robotaxis in Munich starting in 2026.


In humanoid robotics, the competitive picture is striking: Chinese companies including Unitree and Agibot are estimated to account for roughly 90 percent of the global humanoid robot market by current deployment figures, with Xiaomi demonstrating robots achieving three hours of autonomous factory operation and XPeng targeting mass production of its own humanoid robot by the end of 2026. Tesla's own chief executive has acknowledged that China represents the company's most significant competitive threat in robotics, citing China's manufacturing scale and strength in artificial intelligence.


At the same time, U.S. trade policy currently keeps Chinese electric vehicles largely out of the American market. Imports carry tariffs of 100 percent or more on top of standard rates, and additional restrictions apply to connected-vehicle hardware and software. This stands in contrast to markets such as the European Union, where tariffs on Chinese EVs range from roughly 17 to 35 percent, and Mexico, where lower tariffs allowed Chinese brands to capture a meaningful share of the market before policy tightened. For an investor, this matters: part of Tesla's domestic market position reflects a policy environment that does not extend to the markets where Tesla competes most directly with lower-priced Chinese alternatives.


A Pattern Without a Cohesive Core

Tesla and SpaceX share a structural similarity worth noting for investors considering either company, today or in a future SpaceX listing. Both businesses generate real, substantial cash flow from a mature core product, vehicles for Tesla, and satellite internet for SpaceX, while a more ambitious and far less proven undertaking sits alongside it: full autonomy and humanoid robotics for Tesla, and Mars colonization for SpaceX. By Elon Musk's own public statements, Starlink's cash flow is intended in part to fund Starship and Mars-related development, a flow of capital from a profitable, scalable business toward a venture with no current revenue and no established economic model for return.


Compared with how platform companies such as Microsoft or Google have compounded their core advantages over decades, the pattern across Musk's ventures looks different: a strong initial success in a category, Tesla in electric vehicles, SpaceX in reusable launch, followed by a string of additional ambitions, Hyperloop, The Boring Company, Neuralink, Optimus, Starship and Mars, announced before the prior undertaking has fully matured. Full self-driving has been described as imminent since 2016 and remains, by the company's own description, at a quasi-Level 4 stage in 2026.


This is not a claim that nothing has succeeded. Tesla's revenue and SpaceX's launch dominance are real. But the absence of a single compounding thread across these ventures, the kind of mutually reinforcing moat that defines a generational platform company, makes it difficult to build a fundamentals-based valuation case for the premium these stocks command. The premium appears to track attention and ambition more closely than it tracks delivered results.


Two Ways to Read the Same Gap

The gap between Tesla's fundamentals and its valuation is a single fact, but it supports two very different responses, depending on an investor's orientation.


For a conservative investor, the segment data, margin trends, and competitive landscape laid out above are all knowable, yet none of it closes the gap to the current valuation. That gap is filled by something other than fundamentals, which means the position cannot be confidently underwritten using fundamental analysis alone. This doesn't imply mispricing in either direction; it's simply information. The wide range of outcomes, from the premium expanding further if these bets land, to the stock repricing toward auto-industry multiples if they do not, is precisely the kind of dispersion that can produce large gains for investors positioned ahead of a catalyst, and large losses for those caught on the wrong side of one.
